This is a simple and elegant look which works great for guys. Lenny gave me a variety of poses and my lighting complimented his expression. The shoot was quick and easy since I knew what I wanted and Lenny got it immediately.

Photographing men is different from photographing women and since I feel more comfortable around girls I put these shoots together to remind myself how exciting it is to photograph guys as well. They have a different look and approach to things. Their posing and gesture is different which allows me to expand the variety of looks I can create.

The lighting set up was very simple. It included one off camera flash (580 ex II) positioned on camera left (and also moved on camera right) behind the subject and pointed at about 45 degrees back to the camera. The light modifier was one of my new favorites I exploit for off camera flashes, the 43″ Westcott Apollo Orb. Here are some more of the results:

An obituary published in The New York Times said that “his fashion and portrait photographs helped define America’s image of style, beauty and culture for the last half-century.

David Hobby originally shared this video and I had to add a link on the blog.

This documentary is such an inspiration and Richard Avedon is a true photography genius. It makes you think and examine yourself as an artist. The found image couldn’t satisfy Avedon. He wanted to be a creator, not an observer. He nurtured the things most people discarded and he brought the story to fashion.

It is a must see movie. I can’t highly recommend it.
